It was a giant predator that inhabited the ancient seas that covered much of what we know today as Europe. Regarding size, some researchers propose estimates of more than 10 m (33 ft) by applying the aforementioned ratio of one seventh between skull length and body length, estimating that the largest known specimen of L. ferox measured
