The main purpose was to protect the upper part of the shoes from spattering with mud. The name therefore derives from spatterdash . These are made in the best quality heavyweight pure wool melton so do not curl irritatingly at the toe. Please note that the grey are hand dyed which gives them a convincingly vintage look however the edges visibly whiter. They are exact replicas of originals
